Grief Counseling in Raleigh, NC
Raleigh, NC & virtually across North Carolina
Grief doesn't follow a schedule, and honestly, it rarely looks the way you'd expect. Some days it hits you out of nowhere. Other days it's just a quiet ache sitting underneath everything else you're doing. Whatever loss brought you here, whether sudden or after a long goodbye, you don't have to carry it by yourself.
What Is Grief Counseling, and How Does It Work?
Here's something that might surprise you: grief researchers have mostly moved away from the old idea that mourning happens in neat, predictable stages. These days, grief is understood more as something you move in and out of, sometimes called a "dual process," in which you're confronting the loss head-on one moment and simply trying to get through your day the next. Sometimes both in the same afternoon. Your therapist's job isn't to rush you toward some finish line. It's to help you hold all of it without judgment.
We also pay close attention to what's called disenfranchised grief: loss that doesn't always get the recognition it deserves. A miscarriage, the death of a pet, an estranged relationship, a loss from years ago that never really got its own space. And grief isn't only about death, either. Divorce, job loss, and other major life changes can bring a strikingly similar grieving process, and we treat that with just as much care.

What Grief Can Look Like
Avoiding reminders of the loss, or not being able to stop thinking about it

Is Grief and Bereavement Counseling Right for You?
✔ Your grief feels heavier or longer-lasting than the people around you seem to expect
✔ You're not sure how to even talk about your loss with family or friends
✔ Daily life has felt harder since your loss
✔ You want a space to grieve that isn't wrapped up in other people's discomfort
There's no wrong way to grieve, and no expiration date on needing support. If it feels like more than you can carry alone, that's reason enough to reach out.
What to Expect From a Grief Counseling Session
Grief counseling here moves at your pace. It's never a script, and it's never a checklist.
1. Telling Your Story
We get to know your loss, your relationship to it, and what grief has actually looked like for you.
2. Making Space for All of It
Sadness, anger, relief, guilt. It's all welcome here, even the parts that feel confusing.
3. Finding What Helps You Carry It
Coping strategies, rituals, and the language to talk about your loss with others.
We help you rebuild some stability, without ever asking you to "move on."
4. Adjusting to a Changed Life
Why Work with Our Grief Therapists in Raleigh, NC?
A Compassionate, Judgment-Free Space
No timelines, no pressure to "be further along" than you are.
Evidence-Based, Trauma-Informed Care
Including EMDR, which can help when grief feels stuck rather than easing with time, something we dig into in EMDR Therapy for Grief.
Whole-Person Focus
We look at how grief is showing up in your sleep, your relationships, your whole life, not just your mood.
Real, Relatable Support
No clinical distance, just people who take your loss seriously.
Adults and Seniors
Adults and seniors often come to us after losing a spouse, parent, or close friend, sometimes after decades together. The National Institute on Aging points out that grieving a spouse can bring real physical pain along with the emotional weight, and that support helps even when it can't erase the loss.
Kids and Teens (Ages 5-17)
Kids and teens tend to grieve in bursts rather than one long stretch of sadness, and they often need extra help finding the words for a loss they don't fully understand yet. We offer child therapy and teen therapy built around how grief shows up at each age.
We also offer individual therapy and can point you toward grief support groups if being around others who get it sounds like the right next step. For more on coping day to day, check out our guides on coping with grief and loss and talking to family and friends about your grief.
Bereavement Counseling in Raleigh for Individuals and Families

You Don't Have to Grieve Alone
Grief can feel really isolating, especially once everyone around you has gone back to their normal routines. You're still allowed to be grieving. We're here to walk with you, however long that takes.
Frequently Asked Questions
We know exploring counseling can feel overwhelming, so here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions. If you don’t see your question here, we are only a message away.

Yes, for a lot of people, honestly. Grief doesn't move through a tidy set of stages on a set timeline, so it's completely normal for it to resurface hard around anniversaries, holidays, or a random reminder you didn't see coming. That said, if your grief has stayed severe and is really getting in the way of daily life well beyond what feels sustainable, that's sometimes called prolonged grief disorder, and it's worth reaching out for support if you haven't already.
-
There's no strict line here, and needing support doesn't mean you're grieving "wrong." Generally, if grief feels like it's getting worse instead of gradually easing, or it's seriously affecting how you function at work, in relationships, or day-to-day, grief counseling can help. You don't need to hit some clinical threshold to reach out.
-
We mainly offer individual grief counseling, and we're happy to point you toward grief support groups if being with others who understand sounds helpful alongside your sessions. A lot of clients find that combination works well.
-
Yes. Grief shows up after divorce, job loss, miscarriage, estrangement, and plenty of other major life changes, not just death. If a loss has changed your life and you're struggling with it, grief counseling can help no matter what kind of loss it was.
-
We operate out-of-network, so we don't bill insurance directly. We do provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement, depending on your out-of-network benefits, and a lot of clients use HSA or FSA funds to cover sessions instead.
