Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy in Raleigh, NC
Raleigh, NC & virtually across North Carolina
If part of you wants to move forward while another part won't let you, you're not broken. You're human. Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a psychotherapy model that helps you understand your parts and reconnect with your core Self.
What Is Internal Family Systems Therapy, and How Does It Work?
Internal family systems therapy is a talk therapy model built on the idea that your mind is made up of different parts, each with its own emotions, memories, and job to do. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz and recognized as an evidence-based therapeutic approach, IFS has become one of the most widely used models for trauma, anxiety, and self-worth work.
Some parts are protective, stepping in fast to keep you safe, whether that looks like overworking, shutting down, or people-pleasing. Other parts are wounded, holding onto old pain from earlier in your life. Underneath it all is your core Self, the calm, compassionate center that can lead your internal system once your parts feel safe enough to step back.
At Your Journey Through, we use IFS to help you get curious about your parts instead of getting swept up in them, so you leave sessions feeling more like yourself, not less.

Could You Benefit From an IFS Therapist in Raleigh, NC?
If you're tired of the same patterns showing up again and again, IFS therapy may be the approach you've been searching for.
IFS therapy is often recommended for people who:
✔ Feel like different parts of them want different things
✔ Want to work through trauma without retelling every detail
✔ Keep repeating patterns they can't seem to break
✔ Feel disconnected from a calm, grounded sense of self
IFS isn't just for big, obvious trauma. It also works well for the quieter, accumulated burdens that build slowly and still weigh on your day-to-day life.
What to Expect from Your First IFS Therapy Session
Every IFS session at Your Journey Through is paced to feel safe and collaborative. Here's the general process:
1. Getting to Know Your System
We start by mapping out your parts together: which ones show up most, and what they're trying to do for you.
2. Building Trust with a Part
Your therapist helps you approach one part at a time with curiosity instead of judgment.
3. Unburdening
Once a part feels safe, we help it release the pain or belief it's been carrying.
We close each session by reconnecting you with your core Self, so it can lead going forward.
4. Integration & Self-Leadership

Frequently Asked Questions
We know exploring counseling can feel overwhelming, so here are answers to our most frequently asked questions. If you don't see yours, we're only a message away.
-
Yes. IFS has a growing body of research behind it, particularly for trauma, anxiety, and depression. Early studies have shown consistent improvements in self-compassion and promising results for PTSD and depressive symptoms.
-
Clients often notice less internal conflict and more day-to-day calm as their parts stop competing for control. Because IFS treats trauma without requiring you to relive it in detail, many people find it feels gentler than approaches that ask you to retell painful memories. Over time, it also builds real, lasting coping skills rather than quick fixes, since you're learning to work with your parts instead of just managing symptoms. Many clients describe feeling more self-compassion toward the parts of themselves they used to judge or ignore, along with a stronger, steadier sense of who they are underneath it all.
-
It varies. IFS is often a relatively longer-term therapy, since building trust with your parts takes time, especially if you're working through longstanding patterns or trauma. Some clients come in with one specific part or pattern they want to understand and see meaningful shifts within several sessions. Others use IFS as an ongoing, deeper process of getting to know their whole internal system, which can take months or longer.
-
Your Journey Through is an out-of-network practice. We provide superbills so you can submit for potential reimbursement through your insurance plan, typically 60–80% of the session cost, depending on your plan. We're also partnered with Thrizer, a benefits tracker that helps you understand and actually use your out-of-network benefits without the paperwork headache. We're happy to walk you through your options when you reach out.

Despite the name, IFS isn't the same as family systems therapy, and it's not therapy for families. Family systems therapy (sometimes called Bowen family systems therapy) looks at the relationships and roles between actual family members, often with more than one person in the room. IFS borrows the "systems" framework, but applies it inward: it treats your own mind as a system made up of different parts, each with its own role, the same way a family has different members.
-
Yes. Our online teletherapy platform, SimplePractice, is secure and HIPAA-compliant, offering individual IFS therapy to clients across North Carolina. Parts work translates well to a virtual setting since it's a conversational process, so you'll get the same depth of care whether you're in our North Raleigh office or joining from home.
-
That's completely normal, and it's actually the starting point for most clients. You don't need language for your parts already figured out, a diagnosis, or a clear sense of what's "wrong." Your first few sessions are about getting curious together: what shows up when you feel anxious, shut down, or reactive, and what that might be trying to protect you from. We'll build that understanding one conversation at a time.
